About Central Christian Church

Central Christian Church has been on the corner of Peabody and McLean since 1924.  We are congregationally governed by a board of men and women and youth we elect each year. We believe in the centrality of Christ and His revelation of God. Individually, our members have strong doctrinal beliefs, but we do not make these doctrines a test of fellowship. To be a member, we don't ask what you believe, but in whom you believe.

About the Disciples of Christ

From its beginning this congregation has been a part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Sometimes we are referred to as "Disciples."

We are an American-born church with origins on the frontier in the early 19th century. In 1832, two American frontier religious movements came together. One, led by Barton Stone, called itself simply, "Christians." Thomas and Alexander Campbell's group was called "Disciples of Christ." One important belief back then and now is that people shouldn't be forced to put faith in creeds but only in Jesus Christ. The two key words of the Disciples are "freedom" and "unity."  We believe strongly that persons who confess Christ as Savior ought to be free to read their Bible and interpret it in the light of their own understanding -- and grant others that same freedom.

Another strong belief is that God wants churches to be in unity instead of in pieces.  And we  believe in the unity of Christ's church and that all Christ's followers ought to be united in fellowship and worship.

Some other Disciples congregations in the Memphis area are Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, Lindenwood Christian Church and Kingsway Christian Church.
